Burnsville Center Mall has been an iconic mall for the Twin Cities area residents since its construction. However, it has been on a decline in popularity although populations in the area increase. The city of Burnsville has started to think about creating a master plan for demolition, adapted reuse, and new construction on the site of the existing mall. Parts of the mall are currently condemned and require demolition, but some parts are able to be adapted and reused.
My proposed master plan includes keeping sections of the mall and getting rid of others, making new connections to existing surrounding roads and trails, adding a transit hub and park, a community center, new commercial and residential areas, and park spaces.
This design focuses on LEED-ND requirements and leans towards people-oriented design rather than car-centric design principles. All roads have sidewalks, all except for the “Main Roads” have parking, there are bike lanes and “people highways” that make walking, biking, skating, running, all more accessible than driving.
